North Sydney Smallbore Rifle Club: has a 50 metre range with 15 targets on Hornsby Rifle Range, Sydney, Australia.
Everyone is welcome: to try this sport, at our clubhouse on the Hornsby Rifle Range. Coaching is available, and there is a wide range of equipment available for you to use. If you enjoy the experience and think that you would like to continue shooting, come back a few times. Then decide whether to obtain your Firearms Licence/minor's permit.
When: Tuesday and Friday evenings: 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm First Saturday in each Month: 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm First Sunday in each Month: 9.00 am to 12.00 mid day Good Friday/Christmas Day/Boxing Day: no shooting Anzac Day: no shooting until after 1.00 pm
Requirements: If you are interested in giving shooting a go, an email or call to the number below, two or three days in advance, will confirm that the range is available. At the clubhouse the Committee member on duty will be able to help you get started.
Where: The range is part of the Hornsby Rifle Range complex. This is behind Mt Wilga Hospital, Rosamond Street, Hornsby, Sydney, Australia. The UBD map reference is 133 E12, or 191 E12 in Gregory's. Travelling along Rosemond St, turn right into the first Mt. Wilga gate. Travel down Marcus Clark Way and instead of turning left into the Mt Wilga carpark, go straight ahead, through the wire gate.
A flashing red light is placed at this point, at night time, (red flag during the day), to alert people that shooting is taking place on the range. This means proceed down the road with caution ..... ( ie the road is OK, but do not go wandering around in the target areas :)
Read the rifle range warning signs, and proceed down the road, over three speed bumps. The North Sydney Smallbore Clubhouse is the new yellow brick building on your right.
Costs: At approximately 10 cents per round, Small bore shooting is quite cheap. The Club has equipment and rifles available for your use and there is a range fee to cover the cost of the paper targets, lighting and overheads. Ammunition is available for sale at the club, and rifles and gear can be hired for the evening ... see the "costs" page.
Competition: Small bore rifle shooting has a long competitive history. It is one of the oldest of the modern Olympic sports, it is included in the Commonwealth Games and in the World Championships, conducted by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF).
Within Australia there are State and National championships. Small bore shooting is also featured in the Masters Games programme. For more details on Small bore shooting in Australia, go to the Target Rifle Australia website. At the elite level separate events are conducted for men and for women, but at more normal levels competition is completely open.
Distance: Most of our club shooting is prone at 50 metres. We also provide competition and practice for field rifle, primarily from the prone position. In addition to small bore rifle events, we cater for 300m Rifle, also a World Championship discipline.
Rifle Dimensions: The small bore target rifle weighs about 5 kg and fires a single 5.56 mm rimfire cartridge - .22" Long Rifle in non-metric terms. There is hardly any recoil from this small calibre firearm. As with all forms of target shooting, the safety rules are strictly enforced. Beginners: are permitted to shoot without a Firearms Licence, but they must complete a Firearms P650 Form, available at the Clubhouse. This form has check boxes where you confirm that you are of good character, and a photo ID card, such as a driver's licence, is required to establish your identity / age. You will be given a Firearms Safety talk before you shoot.
Juniors, those under 18 years of age, must either come accompanied by parent/gaurdian who have their photo ID with them, or bring a photocopy of that photo ID (this can be Driver's Licence or Passport).
Those carrying an appropriate A class firearms licence can shoot without completing a P650. Attendance at the range can also be documented to satisfy the attendance requirements of your firearms licence.
Legal requirements: The Club has accredited officials licenced to conduct firearms safety training and tests. These are conducted by our club officials on an individual basis.
