beginner page1 setup
Beginners:    Page 1. Setting up.

Tuesday and Friday evenings, 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm are set aside for members to shoot, and beginners, if there is space. Committee members are on duty at this time to help you get started.
Beginners are now ( July 2009 ) permitted to shoot without a Firearms Licence, but they must complete a Firearms P650 Form, available at the Clubhouse. This form has check boxes where you confirm that you are of good character, and a photo ID card, such as a driver's licence, is required to establish your identity / age.

Minors ...... age 12 to under 18 can shoot, under a "minor's permit". They need parent / gaurdian (with their photo ID) present, to counter sign the P650 form.

Call:

A phone call two or three days in advance will confirm that we can help you get started. Some nights are booked out in advance for competitions. There is a Safety Talk to be completed before you can shoot.

Arrive:
Early is good, 6.45pm, because we can then work out how many people will need to do the Safety Lecture. Bring your photo ID. We now (July2011) ask you to leave the photo ID with the cashier, while shooting, as a "deposit" for the firearm. This allows us to verify exactly who is using each one.

To sign in: start at the right hand end of the table and work your way down to the office.

Step 1: Visitor's Book:
Enter your name and sign the visitors book.

Shooting fees Sheet:
This details the costs involved. Beginners use a "adult visitors package", which covers range fee, ammunition and rifle hire. ......... $25 July2011. ........ (the "junior visitors package" is $20 )

Fill out the P650 form:
This P650 form has check boxes where you confirm that you are of good character and you declare that are not in a situation that restricts access to firearms. If you are a minor, it also ensures that your parent/gaurdian know/approve/allow you to be in a situation where you are handling firearms.

Pay the Cashier: Cash only. The cashier will need to see the photo ID and confirm that it is current. They sign the P650 and tick that you are approved to shoot.

Leave photo ID: as "deposit" for the firearm.

Tell the cashier: That you are a begginer, so they can set up a Safety Talk. This happens at the table in the centre of the room. It takes exactly 30 minutes, which coincides with the first detail shooting outside. You get to shoot in the second detail, if there is space.

Target Allocation: Put your name on the target allocation sheet. Skip detail 1, you will be at the safety talk. Put you name down for detail 2 and 3.  Remember your target number!

Tell the cashier: which type of rifle and sights you would prefer to use ... this is usually a telescope rifle. This is a good time to say if you are left handed, so that we can allocate target spaces better.

Read the legal information and rules: Collect a set of rules and go to the centre table and read them, whilst waiting for the safety talk. Y
ou should be ready to shoot 25 rounds from 8.00 to 8.30 and 25 rounds from 8.30 to 9.00 pm.

We run four details /squads through the evening. You will miss detail four because you will be waiting for your target to be scored, and basically having a debriefing chat with members.

We try to place members on targets 1 to 10 and visitors on 11 to 15, which are closer to the Range Officer. Another factor here is whether you are in a group of two or three which needs to be placed together.

Set up equipment: Eventually, after the Safety talk, you will go out to the verandah and set up a mat, a wooden stand and a sock full of sand, on you target number. They are in a cupboard, way up the left hand end of the verandah. Take them back to your target number and set them up, as shown below.

Collect the rifle: A member will issue you with the rifle. After checking that there are no people in the danger zone, the rifle is put on the mat as shown. The bolt and magazine will be removed from the rifle.

Remove the bolt from the rifle: If the rifle has a bolt in it, ask for supervision as you remove it.  Check that the rifle is pointed in a safe direction ... toward the targets. Open the bolt and then squeeze the trigger fully back. Now the bolt will slide out of the rifle.

Remove the magazine from the rifle: Check that the rifle is pointed in a safe direction ... toward the targets. There is a small lever in front of the magazine, push this towards the back of the rifle. Now the magazine will slide down, out of the rifle.

"Clear" the rifle: Ask for supervision as you
check that the rifle is empty "clear". First check that the rifle is pointed in a safe direction ... toward the targets. Hold the butt end of the rifle up to your eye and look out through the empty barrel. It should be empty .. "clear".      Say "CLEAR" loudly, so that everyone knows you are a safety conscious hero. Put the rifle down on the mat.

Put a Safety Flag in the rifle:
On the Range Officer's desk there is a jar of yellow (these have replaced the blue ones), plastic flags. Get a yellow plastic Safety Flag and put it in the breech of the rifle.

Have a quiet look at the rifles. Every rifle has it's bolt removed, it's magazine removed and has been loudly declared "CLEAR" ... empty. It has aSafety Flag in the breech and is flat on the ground, pointing towards the targets. The shooters are standing back away from the firearms and the Range Officer is constantly monitoring the Safety of the Rifle Range.

Go set up your target: The paper targets are kept alongside the Range Officer's desk. On the Range Officer's instruction "Range is clear, it is safe to go forward", take a paper target down to the target gallery and stab it onto the 6 nails in the wood frame of the target. Walk back and wait behind the red line.

Check you have ammunition: A member will issue you with a box of 50 low velocity (subsonic) .22 calibre bullets. You will use 5 bullets for "sighters" in stage 1 and then 20 counting shots.

The other 25 bullets are kept for stage 2.
