During competition, single shot, bolt action, .22 calibre target rifles, in the prone position, with peep sights are used. To reduce noise levels, low velocity .22 ammunition is on sale at the office.
When: Tuesday evening: 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm Friday evening: 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm First Saturday in each Month: 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm Good Friday/Christmas Day/Boxing Day: no shooting Anzac Day: no shooting until after 1.00 pm
Starting out: There is a wide range of equipment available for beginners and coaching is available. Email or call the number below, two or three days in advance, to confirm that the range is available. At the clubhouse the Duty Manager will be able to help you get started. Contact: mobile number: 0419 018 844
Beginners: are permitted to shoot without a Firearms Licence, but they must complete a Firearms P650 Form, available at the Clubhouse. This form has check boxes where you confirm that you are of good character.
A photo ID card, such as a driver's licence, is required to establish your identity / age. You will be given a Firearms Safety talk before you shoot.
Juniors: (12 - 18 years of age), must be accompanied by parent/gaurdian who have their photo ID with them, (this can be Driver's Licence or Passport). Shooters with a class A firearms licence can shoot without completing a P650 form. Attendance at the range can also be documented for the attendance requirements of your firearms licence.
Costs: At approximately 10 cents per round, Small bore shooting is quite cheap. The Club has equipment available for your use. Ammunition is on sale at the club, and rifles and gear can be hired for the evening. Visitors are offered a $25 starting package ( December 2011 )..... see the "costs" page.
Where: The range is part of the Hornsby Rifle Range complex, behind Mt Wilga Hospital, Rosamond Street, Hornsby, Sydney, Australia. Travelling along Rosemond St, turn right into the first Mt. Wilga gate ( "gate A" ). Instead of turning left into the Mt Wilga carpark, go straight ahead, down the lane.
Safety flag:A red flag is placed at this point during the day to alert people that shooting is taking place on the range. The flag is replaced with a red flashing light, at night. This means proceed down the road with caution ..... (the road is OK, but do not go into the target areas).
At the first wire gate, read the rifle range warning signs. If the gate is locked you will have to wait for the duty person to arrive and unlock (please don't park on the neighbors lawn). After three speed bumps the North Sydney Smallbore Clubhouse is the new yellow brick building on your right. Members, licenced shooters and visitors are welcome at our clubhouse, on the Hornsby Rifle Range. If you are interested in giving shooting a go, start as a visitor. If you enjoy the experience and think that you would like to continue shooting, the P650 form allows you to come back a number of times. Then decide whether to obtain your Firearms Licence / minor's permit.
Goals: Following the completion of the new clubhouse, shown above, we are currently working towards setting up an Air Rifle range and providing electronic targets on the 50 metre Smallbore range.
Competition: Small bore rifle shooting has a long competitive history. It is one of the oldest of the modern Olympic sports, it is included in the Commonwealth Games and in the World Championships, conducted by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF).
Within Australia there are State and National championships. Small bore shooting is also featured in the Masters Games programme. For more details on Small bore shooting in Australia, go to the Target Rifle Australia website. At the elite level separate events are conducted for men and for women, but at more normal levels competition is completely open.
Distance: Most of our club shooting is prone at 50 metres. We also provide competition and practice for field rifle, primarily from the prone position. In addition to small bore rifle events, we cater for 300m Rifle, also a World Championship discipline.
Rifle Dimensions: The small bore target rifle weighs about 5 kg and fires a single 5.56 mm rimfire cartridge - .22" Long Rifle in non-metric terms. There is hardly any recoil from this small calibre firearm. As with all forms of target shooting, the safety rules are strictly enforced.
Legal requirements: The Club has accredited officials licenced to conduct firearms safety training and tests. These are conducted by our club officials on an individual basis.
